The death toll from the super-typhoon is now above 6,000 and rising. Our New Hope team of 21 has just returned exhausted after risking their lives in the most remote areas of Samar and Leyte. The navy gave us free passage for four heavily loaded vehicles. The team found things worse than they could imagine - 4 million homeless - equal to the entire population of NZ! There is death and devastation with many villages totally crushed. Workers cried, listened, loved and prayed with the sick, homeless, starving and heartbroken. We served with medical care, food, blankets and building tools. Help was extended to 4,836 people. This tragedy will soon disappear from news headlines but aid will be needed for years. There will be no Christmas break for our workers as they prepare for a second better prepared mission during January. Prayer is much valued.
