I have been reflecting on the importance of mission and its place in church life. The more I think about it, the more I know that mission is at the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus who has a heart for what God has a heart for. Lets start our year with a few fresh convictions that might guide our church life and our own emphasis as we make decisions in our work, service and life as a whole.

Conviction 1 - God Created the World for the Praise of His Glory.
Mission convictions start with the foundation that God is the sovereign Creator of everything that exists and that He created all things for the praise of His glory. As a church, we exist for the praise, and glory, and honour of God who created us.

Conviction 2 - The Entire Human Race has Rejected God and His Glory.
Even though God created the world for the praise of His glory, right now all of humanity has rejected God and His glory. The result of humanity's rejection of God is His just punishment for all who have rebelled against Him.

Conviction 3 – God's Mission is to Redeem a People for the Praise of His Glory.
God knew before the foundation of the world that mankind would rebel against Him. God planned from eternity past to rescue a people, from the guilt and punishment of their sin, and for the praise of His glory. This is the mission of God.

Conviction 4 – The Mission of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
God the Father sent Jesus to accomplish His rescue mission through redemption. Jesus redeemed a people from their bondage of slavery to sin through His perfect life, substitutionary death, and life giving resurrection. The Holy Spirit is regenerating those who have been redeemed by Jesus. The whole trinity is at work all of the time.

Conviction 5 – The Mission of the Local Church is the Mission of God.
The church exists because of the mission of God, and for the mission of God. GC3 exists to facilitate the spreading of the good news of what God has done through Jesus Christ known to all people everywhere.

Conviction 6 - The Church Exists to Proclaim and Demonstrate the Gospel.
If God's mission is to redeem a people for the praise of His glory, and if the church exists to execute God's mission, then the church exists to proclaim and demonstrate the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the good news of all that God has done for all of creation (with specific emphasis on humanity) through Jesus Christ.

Conviction 7 –Those Who Respond in Repentance and Faith are Rescued.
Repentance is a turning away from our rebellion against God, seeking His forgiveness, and forsaking a life of rebellion. Faith is casting ourselves wholly and only on Jesus Christ for our forgiveness from God, reconciliation with God, and righteousness standing before God.

Conviction 8 – God's Mission Sends The Church to All Nations.
God's mission is to rescue people from all nations and He sends the church with the Gospel to all ethnicities all over the world. Mission starts locally and expands regionally, nationally, and globally to all peoples from every tongue, tribe, nation, and language.

Conviction 9 – God's Mission for the Church Includes Discipleship/Evangelism, Church Planting, Pastoral Training, and Mercy Ministries, care of creation and being a witness to his glory.

Conviction 10 - The End of All of Human History is the Praise of God's Glory.
At the end of human history, whether willingly or unwillingly, every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Included in that chorus will be the community of the redeemed – the fruit of God's mission of redemption.
